Worried about swelling on your face or jaw? This may be a problem with your salivary glands.
The salivary glands produce your saliva. The parotid glands, submandibular glands, and sublingual glands all help moisturize our mouths and start the process of digestion. Problems can arise, including salivary gland stones, infections, and tumors.
The parotid gland is a large salivary gland located in the cheek, in front of and below the ear. A parotid tumor is an abnormal growth of cells in the gland and can either be benign or malignant. Parotid tumors are usually treated with parotidectomy—a straightforward process that involves surgically removing the tumor. However, if the tumor is cancerous, then additional treatment may be required. Kentuckiana ENT has otolaryngologists with expertise in parotidectomy.
Similar to the parotid gland, the submandibular gland is located just below the jawline. This gland is subject to the same conditions as the parotid gland. See Kentuckiana ENT to get an expert ENT surgeon with experience in submandibular gland surgeries.
Sialadenitis (salivary gland infection) and sialolithiasis (salivary gland stones) are painful conditions of the salivary glands. Treatment includes medications such as antibiotics, hydration, gland massage, and possible surgery to remove the infection or stone.
During the physical exam, the doctor will feel along your jaw, neck, and inside your mouth to see if there are any lumps or swelling as well as assess your saliva production.
A needle biopsy performed under local anesthetic may be required to aid in diagnosis and treatment of salivary gland tumors.
Imaging tests of your parotid or submandibular gland will help to further investigate the problem.
